Alcohol Awareness Month
April is Alcohol Awareness Month that began as a way of reaching the American public with information about the disease of alcoholism-that it is a treatable disease, not a moral weakness, and that alcoholics are capable of recovery. The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence has sponsored Alcohol Awareness Month since 1987.
Each year the Substance Abuse Council along with various local agencies construct a Mock Car Crash scene to remind teens of the dangers of drinking and driving. This year we have an advertising campaign with Unique Screen Media at the local cinemas to target youth. These are shown at all 18 Showplace East Cinema's, 1 North Side Showplace Cinema, 1 South Side Cinema, and one Newburgh Cinema
Orange Ribbon Campaign
The Orange Ribbon Campaign officially started in January 2001 under the Indiana Coalition to Reduce Underage Drinking. The coalition is aimed at reducing underage drinking through public policy. The goal of the campaign is to use education and media outreach to make the Orange Ribbon a recognized symbol. The coalition has also partnered with ITI Adventure and SADD (Students Against Drunk Driving) to bring awareness to the issues of underage drinking.
National Drunk & Drugged Driving Prevention Month 3-D Month
In December of 2003, we posted yard signs around the Vanderburgh County area reminding citizens NOT TO DRIVE DRUNK OR DRUGGED.
Every year the Substance Abuse Council, Deaconess Cross Pointe and the Indiana State Excise Police work together to mail out posters to all Liquor License Holders in Vanderburgh County that state, “WE ENCOURAGE DESIGNATED DRIVERS”.
